Mission Statement and Description

Mesa County Animal Services enforces animal ordinances to protect the safety and welfare of the citizens and pets of Mesa County. Our objective is to place as many displaced animals as possible and promote responsible pet ownership and education.

Animal Services helps develop, implement, and enforce County ordinances intended to protect both pets and pet owners. The department operates a pet shelter, investigates cases involving animal aggression as well as animal abuse and neglect, and works with the community to license and re-home pets.

2024 Goals, Objectives, and Performance Indicators

  1. Respond to the increase in reports and investigations regarding complex animal incidents, including animal bites, dangerous dogs, nuisance animals, and welfare checks.
  2. 75% of the Animal Service Officers will achieve State or National Animal Service Certifications and current qualified officers will maintain certifications.
  3. Improve customer service by issuing a customer service survey, providing customer service training to staff, implementing an automated customer check system, and enhancing building security while maintaining citizen access.
