The Board of Commissioners pass resolution opposing Senate Bill 25-003

On April 8, at their regular administrative hearing, the Board of Mesa County Commissioners formally passed a resolution opposing Senate Bill 25-003 and urging Colorado Governor Jared Polis to veto it because it represents government overreach, threatens constitutional rights, and harms law-abiding citizens and businesses.

The resolution outlines the board’s concern for the bill regarding the unnecessary barriers it places on the Second Amendment rights of responsible gun owners and the negative effects it would have on our local law enforcement, businesses and economy. 

The resolution explains how this legislation diverts focus from addressing actual criminal behavior and instead punishes responsible ownership.

“It criminalizes rights; it targets law-abiding citizens: veterans, regular citizens, moms who are trying to protect their kiddos. That’s not safety. That’s overreach,” Cody Davis, Chair of the Board of County Commissioners said. “You shouldn’t need a government permission slip to use your constitutional rights.”

The Board of Mesa County Commissioners finds this legislation to be an overreach of state authority, an affront to personal freedom, and a direct threat to public safety and the economic well-being of Coloradans.
