The board of commissioners sends letter of support for BLOC Act
During the April 15 administrative public hearing, the Board of Mesa County Commissioners approved a letter of support to U.S. Rep. Jeff Crank in response to House Resolution 1984, Blocking Lawless Open Border Cities Act of 2025.
The letter stated, “The BLOC Act represents an important step in holding sanctuary jurisdictions accountable for their failure to enforce immigration law. By withholding critical federal transportation funds from areas that choose to ignore their duty to cooperate with immigration enforcement, this bill ensures that taxpayer dollars are not being used to further undermine the rule of law. Withholding these funds will help reduce the indirect costs associated with illegal immigration and better align federal resources with jurisdictions that are committed to public safety.”

On behalf of the Mesa County Board of Commissioners, we write in support of your Blocking Lawless Open Border Cities (BLOC) Act of 2025, H.R. 1984. This crucial legislation aims to stop the Department of Transportation from funding transportation and infrastructure projects in sanctuary cities and counties that refuse to comply with federal immigration laws, particularly those jurisdictions that fail to notify U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at least 48 hours before releasing individuals in their custody who are in the country illegally.
Illegal immigration has created serious and ongoing challenges in Colorado, including in Mesa County. Communities throughout our state, including those in our own county, are seeing an uptick in criminal activity tied to individuals who are unlawfully present in the U.S. These crimes not only threaten the safety and well-being of our residents, but they also place immense burdens on our law enforcement officers and the judicial system. The refusal of sanctuary cities and counties to cooperate with federal immigration authorities only exacerbates these issues.
The BLOC Act represents an important step in holding sanctuary jurisdictions accountable for their failure to enforce immigration law. By withholding critical federal transportation funds from areas that choose to ignore their duty to cooperate with immigration enforcement, this bill ensures that taxpayer dollars are not being used to further undermine the rule of law. Withholding these funds will help reduce the indirect costs associated with illegal immigration and better align federal resources with jurisdictions that are committed to public safety.
We greatly appreciate your leadership on this issue, which aligns with our own efforts to restore local control and ensure that immigration laws are respected. The Mesa County Board of Commissioners stands firmly in support of the BLOC Act and looks forward to working with you to make Colorado—and our nation—a safer and more lawful place for all.
Thank you for your efforts to reduce illegal immigration and secure the border. We support the BLOC Act and stand with you as you continue to improve public safety in our communities.
