Noxious weeds are invasive plants that outcompete native species and can be harmful to humans, livestock and crops. In Mesa County’s high desert climate, these species can take hold quickly and spread aggressively.

Mesa County is home to several high-priority noxious weeds, including Purple loosestrife, Yellow star thistle, Flowering rush, Leafy spurge, Giant reedgrass, Yellow flag iris and Dalmation toadflax. Without treatment, these plants can form dense monocultures that push out native vegetation and disrupt local ecosystems. Most of these plants were originally brought here as an ornamental. Mesa County Noxious Weed and Pest Management assists private landowners in treatments of high-priority species, as well as providing education about noxious weeds and how to treat them.

The county’s weed and pest management team has been treating invasive species for nearly two decades. Community involvement also plays a key role, as residents have helped identify new infestations through tips from concerned citizens.

A full list of Colorado’s noxious weeds, as well as identification tips and treatment options, is available through the Colorado Department of Agriculture.
