Progress continues on the 32 1/2 Road and Clifton Campus Roadway Improvement Project, which will bring crucial infrastructure upgrades to the Clifton area, enhancing safety and accessibility.

What’s included in the project?

  • Phase 1: Crews will replace the bridge over the Grand Valley Irrigation Canal on 32 ½ Road, just south of Friendship Drive.
  • Phase 2: A new roundabout and roadway extension will be constructed at the intersection of E Road and 32 ½ Road, connecting to the south end of 32 ½ Road near D 7/8 Road.
  • Phase 3: D ¾ Road will be widened between East Chukar Way and West Chukar Way to a full residential road. A new sidewalk will link Rocky Mountain Elementary Park to the existing sidewalk west of Mountain Vista Drive.

Closures

  • The bridge on 32 ½ Road will close during phase one.
  • The E Road and 32 ½ Road intersection will close during phase two.
  • D ¾ Road between East and West Chukar Way will close during phase three.

Mesa County and the project contractor are nearing completion of phase one of the project, which includes the complete replacement of the bridge over the Grand Valley Irrigation Canal on 32 ½ Road. The new bridge will be wider and include sidewalks on both sides. Phase two of the project will soon get underway.

The bridge on 32 ½ Road remains closed throughout phase one of the project. Please look out for signs in the project area that alert drivers to road closures or detours throughout different phases of the project.

Here's what crews have completed so far:

  • Drove steel support beams 60 feet deep into the ground to create a solid foundation for the new bridge.
  • Installed a durable shotcrete liner in the irrigation canal near the bridge, including plastic lining, reinforced steel, and a 4-inch sprayable concrete cover.
  • Built and poured the concrete structures (abutments) that support each end of the new bridge.
  • Used a crane to set large concrete beams (girders) that span the canal and support the bridge deck.
  • Formed and poured the concrete bridge deck, which forms the base of the future roadway.
  • Completed major underground utility work, including tying into existing lines while minimizing service disruptions — a time-intensive but essential step.

Once phase one is completed, the crew will proceed to phase two of the project, which involves adding a new roundabout and roadway extension at the intersection of E Road and 32 ½ Road, connecting to the south end of 32 ½ Road near D 7/8 Road.

Please stay tuned for updates on the project's status. You can call the project hotline at 970-549-9611 with any questions about the improvement project.
