At the June 24 public hearing, the Board of Mesa County Commissioners ratified the Community Rating System (CRS) Community Certifications form CC-230 for the Floodplain Management Program, which validates Mesa County's implementation of the Community Rating System program.

The Community Rating System is a voluntary incentive program that recognizes and encourages community floodplain management practices that exceed the minimum requirements of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and makes flood insurance available for Mesa County residents at a discounted price when Mesa County takes specific actions to reduce flood risk in the area.

Residents of Mesa County are eligible to receive a 15% discount on flood insurance due to our current class seven ranking in the Community Rating System.

Mesa County Administrator Todd Hollenbeck signed form CC-230 to validate Mesa County’s proper implementation of the Community Rating System and efforts to:

  1. Reduce and avoid flood damage to insurable property
  2. Strengthen and support the insurance aspects of the National Flood Insurance Program
  3. Foster comprehensive floodplain management

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is a federal program managed by FEMA that provides flood insurance to property owners, renters and businesses in participating communities.  Mesa County is an active NFIP participating community and also volunteers to participate in the Community Rating System (CRS), which rewards communities for implementing floodplain management activities that go above and beyond the requirements of the NFIP. Participating communities receive discounts on flood insurance premiums for our residences based on our CRS class, which reflects our efforts to reduce flood risk. The County takes proactive measures to protect lives and property from flooding, such as improving building codes, floodplain regulations in our Land Development code, public outreach and flood data collection.
