KAFM Community Affairs: Child Abuse Prevention Month
On the third Thursday of each month, the Mesa County Department of Human Services (MCDHS) hosts a segment on the KAFM Community Affairs Program. This month, communications specialist Jesse Baalman spoke with Lauren Miranda, Family Empowerment Supervisor in the Child Welfare Division, about Child Abuse Prevention Month and the work being done locally to support families.
Lauren Miranda shared that the Family Empowerment Team focuses on prevention by working directly with families to strengthen stability and connect them to community resources. This includes support with housing, employment, education and therapeutic services, as well as helping families build stronger support systems. The goal is to reduce risk factors and help keep children safely within their home whenever possible.
Child Abuse Prevention Month is observed each April to raise awareness about the importance of ensuring all children grow up in safe, stable and nurturing environments. This year’s theme, “Pinwheels of Possibilities,” highlights the role communities play in supporting families and preventing child maltreatment before crises occur.
Community members are encouraged to report any concerns of abuse or neglect to the Child Protection Hotline at 970-242-1211. Reports do not require proof, only reasonable concern, and can help connect families to support and services.
Lauren also highlighted the Mesa County Warmline pilot program, which connects callers who do not require a child protection response directly to community resources for support.
At MCDHS, Child Abuse Prevention Month reflects the shared responsibility of the community to support families early, strengthen protective factors, and ensure children have the opportunity to thrive.
