At noon on the third Thursday of every month, Mesa County Department of Human Services conducts an interview on relevant topics as a part of the KAFM Community Affairs program. The latest episode features host Jesse Baalman and Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) Coordinator Jamilla Caez Castro, who discusses program eligibility, impacts and how to apply. The Leap program helps low-income households pay part of their winter heating bills, reducing the financial stress of high heating costs during cold months.

To qualify for the LEAP program, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You are a permanent legal resident of the U.S. and Colorado or have household members that are U.S. Citizens
  • Your maximum family income falls within the guidelines
  • You pay home heating costs to an energy provider, fuel dealer, or as part of your rent

Income guidelines for LEAP:

The maximum gross monthly income for a household size of one is $3,382.

The maximum gross monthly income for a household size of two is $4,423.

The maximum gross monthly income for a household size of three is $5,464.

The maximum gross monthly income for a household size of four is $6,505.

The maximum gross monthly income for a household size of five is $7,545.

The maximum gross monthly income for a household size of six is $8,586.

Each additional member adds a maximum of $195 to the gross monthly income.
