Mesa County Department of Human Services (MCDHS) works to ensure that at-risk adults in our community are safe, supported and able to live with dignity. One way the community helps support vulnerable adults is through permanent guardianship.

How Guardianships Help

Guardianships are often used to support at-risk adults who cannot safely make decisions on their own. This includes older adults or adults with disabilities. In many cases, guardianship helps family members formally step into a support role, allowing them to assist with:

  • Medical decisions and medication management
  • Annual reports required by the court
  • Day-to-day advocacy and oversight

Guardians work within a clear framework and receive guidance, including a guardianship manual that outlines roles, responsibilities and legal requirements.

What It Takes to Be a Guardian

Guardianship is a meaningful commitment and a good fit for individuals who are:

  • Compassionate and reliable
  • Willing to complete required paperwork
  • Comfortable signing off on medical needs
  • Able to pass a background check
  • Interested in helping someone maintain safety and stability
