When we talk about children with “high behavioral needs,” it is easy to focus on the outbursts, defiance or withdrawal we see on the surface. But behavior is a form of communication. Often, these actions are a window into something deeper, such as trauma, loss, fear or simply a lack of trust in the world around them.

Children with higher behavioral needs are often testing whether the adults in their lives are safe, consistent and willing to stay. What they need most is patience, structure and emotional safety. With the right support, they can start to feel secure and understood.

Progress does not always look dramatic. Sometimes it is quieter, like a child sleeping more soundly, asking for help instead of acting out, having fewer outbursts, or showing small moments of trust. These small wins are meaningful steps forward and signs that healing is beginning.

This work does not happen alone. That is why the Mesa County Department of Human Services and Mosaic of Western Colorado support foster families every step of the way. Through trauma-informed training, professional guidance and wraparound services, caregivers never have to go it alone.

Children do not need perfection. They need commitment, patience and someone willing to stay. If you have ever thought about making a difference, now is the time. Become a foster parent through Mesa County Foster Care or a CHRP provider through Mosaic of Western Colorado, and help a child feel seen, safe and supported.
