Understanding types of elder abuse
June is Adult Protection Awareness Month, and it's an important time to learn how we can all help protect vulnerable adults in our community. Mesa County’s Adult Protective Services (APS) team works every day to ensure that at-risk adults are safe, supported and treated with dignity.
Our APS team responds to reports of many kinds of abuse, neglect and exploitation. Here are the most common types:
Physical Abuse: Inflicting physical pain or injury, such as hitting, pushing or improper use of restraints.
Sexual Abuse: Any non-consensual sexual contact or behavior.
Caregiver Neglect: When a responsible caregiver fails to provide necessary care, including food, hygiene or medical attention.
Self-Neglect: When an individual is unable to care for themselves in ways that threaten their health or safety.
Exploitation: The misuse of an adult’s money, property or assets without their consent.
Harmful Acts: Verbal or emotional abuse that causes fear, distress or psychological harm.
If you’re concerned about a friend, neighbor or loved one, our APS team is here to help. Call 970-248-2888 to report concerns. All calls are confidential, and you can remain anonymous.
Mesa County APS is committed to promoting independence, dignity and safety for at-risk adults through compassionate service and strong advocacy. Together, we can reduce mistreatment and create a safer community for all.
