WIC team receives award for work with breastfeeding parents
Mesa County Public Health’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) has been nationally recognized for its outstanding work to support breastfeeding families.
The WIC team’s Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program received the Premiere Award for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Breastfeeding Award of Excellence. The award honors local agencies that demonstrate exceptional commitment to breastfeeding promotion and support. Recipients serve as models for other communities across the country.
“I am beyond proud of the dedication of our team, whose compassionate support has been integral to our program’s success,” said Karla Klemm, WIC Manager. “Their efforts have created a more positive and empowering breastfeeding experience for Mesa County families.”
Community impact
Through the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program, trained peer counselors offer personalized and compassionate guidance to new mothers. This tailored approach provides encouragement, answers questions, and helps families navigate common challenges in their breastfeeding journey.
The impact is clear: in 2023, 72% of WIC participants in Mesa County were breastfeeding at six weeks postpartum, which is a 3% increase over the previous year. Breastfeeding strengthens a baby's immune system and lowers health and medical care costs. It also reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancer for moms and respiratory tract and ear infections for infants.
