Mesa County Commissioners on Dec. 16 approved a $388,185 agreement with SGM Inc. to design the next phase of improvements for Coffman Road.

This work advances Phase II of the Coffman Road rehabilitation project, which focuses on improving safety, drainage and long-term roadway conditions.

The design phase will cover approximately 3,100 feet of Coffman Road, from Highway 141 north to 675 Coffman Road. Planned elements include:

  • Intersection improvements at 1st Street
  • Replacement of the minor structure over Callow Creek
  • Final roadway design and construction specifications

A corridor study and preliminary design were completed in 2023. As part of this phase, SGM will review the earlier work, present a final recommended alternative to Mesa County and the public, and prepare final construction plans.

Mesa County advertised a Request for Qualifications in early October. Four firms submitted proposals: River City Consultants, Bohannan Huston, Short Elliott Hendrickson and SGM.

SGM was selected based on qualifications, and the project scope and fee were successfully negotiated.

This agreement covers design work only. Construction is anticipated to start late next year once final plans are completed.

Mesa County continues to take a phased approach to roadway improvements, allowing projects to move forward thoughtfully while incorporating public input and long-term planning.
