Dust on rural roads affects visibility, air quality and how well roads hold together over time.

Mesa County is continuing its dust control program to address those impacts.

On April 7, the Board of County Commissioners approved a contract with EnviroTech Services, LLC, not to exceed $275,000, for the application of magnesium chloride on county roads.

Crews plan to treat about 64 miles of gravel roads across the county this season.

Magnesium chloride is applied to gravel roads to keep dust down and help bind the road surface.

Magnesium chloride is applied to gravel roads to keep dust down and help bind the surface. This improves visibility for drivers, reduces airborne dust and helps roads last longer.

By stabilizing the surface, crews can spend less time regrading the same roads and focus on other maintenance needs across the county.

Without treatment, dust can reduce visibility, impact nearby homes and agriculture and cause roads to break down faster.

The contract supports ongoing maintenance through the 2026 season, helping keep roads safer, more durable and easier to maintain across Mesa County.
