What happens at the Mesa County landfill affects our air, our water and our community.

On Feb. 17, Mesa County Commissioners approved a contract with Weaver Consultants Group for environmental consulting and engineering services that support safe, compliant landfill operations.

The 2026 agreement, not to exceed $163,000, funds the environmental oversight required to operate a modern landfill responsibly.

Landfills are highly regulated facilities. Mesa County Solid Waste Management must meet state and federal standards designed to protect public health and natural resources.

This contract supports compliance with regulations administered by the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment.

In practical terms, that includes:

  • Monitoring and managing methane gas
  • Conducting groundwater sampling and analysis
  • Managing stormwater and leachate
  • Completing required air emissions reporting
  • Updating the landfill’s Engineering Design and Operations Plan
  • These activities help ensure the landfill operates safely and within environmental standards.

Responsible operations and long-term planning

The contract includes:

  • $100,000 for routine compliance services
  • $63,000 for special projects, including a rate study and a comprehensive waste audit

The rate study and waste audit will help the county evaluate long-term financial sustainability and guide data-informed decisions about solid waste services.

Operating a landfill requires continuous monitoring, engineering oversight and forward planning.

This contract helps Mesa County protect air and water quality, meet permit obligations and maintain a solid waste system residents can trust.
