Treasurer and public trustee to resign to serve as interim finance director
Mesa County Treasurer and Public Trustee Sheila Reiner announced her resignation, effective Sept. 9, to serve as acting finance director following the departure of the Mesa County finance director.
“It has been an honor to serve the citizens of Mesa County as treasurer and public trustee,” said Sheila Reiner. “I have been privileged to work with an outstanding team, and I will miss them greatly. At the same time, I am excited for the opportunity to continue serving Mesa County in a new capacity as acting finance director.”
By policy, Mesa County requires a strict separation of duties between the Treasurer’s Office and Finance. In accordance with this structure, Reiner will formally step down from her elected position before assuming the interim finance role.
The deputy treasurer and public trustee has assumed leadership of the Treasurer’s Office to ensure uninterrupted service to Mesa County residents.
“We thank Sheila Reiner for her dedicated service to residents and for stepping into this interim role as Mesa County transitions leadership in our finance department,” said Mesa County Administrator Todd Hollenbeck. “Mesa County remains committed to strong financial stewardship and transparent fiscal management, and services to residents will carry on seamlessly.”
Under Colorado law, when an elected office becomes vacant before the end of the term, the Board of County Commissioners must appoint a successor. The Board will appoint a new treasurer to serve through December 2026. In the meantime, the chief deputy treasurer will fulfill the duties of the office to ensure continuity of service until a permanent appointment is made.
Key information:
- Treasurer and public trustee operations, including property tax collection and disbursement, will continue without disruption under the deputy treasurer’s leadership.
- Mesa County will begin a formal process to select a permanent finance director.
- The Board of Mesa County Commissioners is responsible for appointing a replacement Treasurer to serve out the elected term ending in December 2026.
