August is Child Support Awareness Month
August is National Child Support Awareness Month, a time to recognize the vital role child support services play in strengthening families and securing a better future for children.
In Mesa County, Child Support Services is part of the Department of Human Services (MCDHS) and is located at the Workforce Center, 512 29 ½ Road and is focused on more than collections. The team takes a whole-family approach by helping parents access the tools and resources they need to support their children and improve long-term outcomes.
“Child support is about more than financial assistance,” said Heather Nara, Director of the Mesa County Workforce Center. “It’s about stability, connection and creating opportunity. Our team works hard to support parents so they can support their children.”
Each month, MCDHS Child Support Services helps ensure that more than $1.1 million in support reaches families. The program manages nearly 6,000 cases and delivers strong results, helping families achieve greater stability and economic security.
Since relocating to the Workforce Center in 2022, Child Support Services has expanded its collaboration with employment and training programs. This allows parents to gain new job skills, find employment and build a stronger financial foundation.
Child support is linked to improved academic achievement and emotional well-being for children. Research shows that a dollar of child support often has a greater positive impact than a dollar from public assistance alone.
